White Silence The first solo
exhibition of 2008 Waverley Art Prize winner and local artist, Mark
Rowden.
While Bondi
celebrates the arrival of winter with the Bondi Winter Magic
Festival, local artist Mark Rowden presents White Silence, a
collection of works based around his passion for snow, at the Bondi
Pavilion Gallery from 13th – 18th July.
“White Silence
is inspired by my childhood memories in England, as well as my
experience of the Australian landscape as an adult,” said Rowden,
who migrated to Australia as a teenager in 1996.
Using three
different art forms – lino-cut printmaking, acrylic painting and
sculpture – the exhibition explores the transformational power of
snow on our perception and interaction with the landscape.
Rowden came to the
attention of the Bondi Pavilion Gallery, run by Waverley Council,
after he won the 2008 Waverley Art Prize for Printmaking. This came
hot on the heels of Rowden’s second placing in the 2007 Showdown
Competition run by the prestigious Saatchi Gallery in London,
from a field of over 3,000 entrants.
Rowden has been an
active member of the Sydney art scene for over a decade, after
graduating from the National Art School in Darlinghurst in 2000. His
work has featured in group exhibitions of many Sydney galleries,
including Chalk Horse, MOP Projects and Blankspace.
Mark Rowden is one
of the community’s most outstanding emerging print makers, It is
with great pleasure that Bondi Pavilion Gallery presents his new
body of work.
